about

TO DAWN

Half-awake, poison was the wind–
Forever will not reach you; you are hunted.
Present among you, leaves and garter snakes,
a whistle knives the yards.

We're alarmed patriots plucking out the chords,
anxiously re-awakened. Dawns on you that one you strangled
will not be back to take breakfast at noon.

We awake, then save the drowning man–
forever is a long time ago.
Three hymns form analogue
with the doubt of saccharine ghosts.

O, I am the Great Dawn! I am The Great Night-Become-Day!
Every alarm is quiet when I patrol the desert.
Your dreams have become tongues
hissing at you that they are not dreams at all.

It collects you, like arms shrouding the sea–
and I am mourning your hammered Soul.

Your eyesight shudders,
white milk drips down paroxysms,
cool things are mixed in: all the embers lit,
an electric saint buries the smallest seed
into your lazy left eye.

Your name, spoken of in twenty stations,
preserved though forbidden, a Great Law
between you and yourself.
